NPC windows and the Vault close when you walk away
Before, when you talked to a merchant, opened the Vault or used the Chaos Machine, your Inventory opened beside it. When you left, the NPC window closed, but the Inventory stayed open and covered the map. Now the Inventory an NPC opened closes together with that NPC window: by walking away, with the X, with Esc, by changing maps or by dying. When you start a trade with another player, the NPC window closes; on a computer, the Inventory stays beside the trade and closes when the trade ends, and on a phone it closes with the NPC window.
If your Inventory was already open before you talked to the NPC, it stays open. Windows you open yourself, such as Character (C), Inventory (I), Skills (K), Quests (J) and the Map (M), stay open while you walk.
Selene's teleport list now closes with her dialog, and also when you talk to another NPC; the list opened from the Map (M) is yours and stays open. Only one NPC window is open at a time: opening the Vault closes the shop, for example. The shop closes a little sooner, still inside the distance where buying and selling work.
No item is lost. If you are holding an item on the cursor when the Inventory closes by itself, it goes back into your bag. If the bag is full, it goes into the Vault while you are still next to it; otherwise it stays on the cursor. It never falls on the ground and is never duplicated.
To see it: talk to a merchant, such as Borin the Blacksmith in the Village of Lumen, or open the Vault. Then walk away: the window and the Inventory close together. On phones, the Inventory opened with the shop's Inventory button also closes with the shop.
